The Law could expose, command, and prepare..but it could never bring anyone in. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd consider the order God works in: before a single wall falls, God tells Joshua, \"I have given Jericho into your hand.” He speaks about the victory as something already finished, before Israel has done a single thing. The land is handed to them as a promise..and they still have to go take hold of it. That gap between what God has already given and what they still have to possess runs through the entire book.\u003cbr\u003eBut the promise stops short. Hebrews 4:8 says that if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have later spoken of another day. The land was real. It just was not the final rest. (Read that verse in the King James and you'll find the translators print the name as \"Jesus\"..because in the Greek, it is.)\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe first Joshua brought them into the promised land but couldn’t bring his people all the way home. That was always the work of the greater Joshua..the One he was named after. I walked away with ten more things I needed to study first…and that is honestly how I have learned to let the Holy Spirit guide my studies. Jonah is about death and resurrection. Israel and the Gentiles. Repentance before judgment. A prophet sent to enemies. A city spared. A servant angry that God showed mercy. A man swallowed into the deep and brought back out on the third day.
