Doctrine does not stay behind a pulpit. It shows up in who is trusted to lead, how people are treated, how money is handled, how sin is confronted, how the vulnerable are cared for, and whether the people teaching the truth are living as though they believe it themselves.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThat is also why Paul is so serious about false teaching. The danger is not simply getting a theological question wrong. Bad doctrine eventually produces bad fruit. It distorts the conscience first, and conduct usually follows.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSo much of Paul’s instruction to Timothy comes back to the same basic responsibility: guard what has been entrusted to you. Do not change it to make it easier to hear. Do not confuse knowledge with godliness. Do not let leadership become about status. Care for God’s people without partiality. Flee what corrupts you. Pursue what reflects Christ. Fight the good fight of faith.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe Church was never given the authority to reinvent the truth. We were entrusted with something we received, not something we authored. The responsibility is to preserve it, submit ourselves to it, and hopefully live in such a way that other people can see some evidence that it is actually true by the fruit it produces in us.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAnd maybe that is the part of 1 Timothy I find most challenging.
