Do you know what Jesus meant when He told the disciples that a wicked and adulterous generation, such as our generation today, would be given only the “sign of Jonah” ?

After I received the Holy Spirit, I became fascinated with that question because almost every Christian I asked had never really considered it. I don’t say that to judge or condemn. I say it as someone who did not grow up in church, had recently accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior, and honestly assumed this would have been one of the first things Christians talked about. But many people I asked did not even know where Jesus said it, even though Matthew records it twice and Luke records it again.

Jonah is two pages in most Bibles. You can knock it out tonight.

True story: after a weekend at a Christian retreat where no one gave me an answer that satisfied the question, I fasted, prayed, and spent an entire weekend listening to Jonah over and over again. Sermons. Lectures. Commentaries. Random resources online. The normal ones and the very strange ones. By the end of that weekend, I did not walk away with one clean answer. I walked away with ten more things I needed to study first…and that is honestly how I have learned to let the Holy Spirit guide my studies. The question is usually only the beginning of the thread.

Two years later, I still do not think the sign of Jonah is a small subject. I think it has layers. Jonah is about death and resurrection. Israel and the Gentiles. Repentance before judgment. A prophet sent to enemies. A city spared. A servant angry that God showed mercy. A man swallowed into the deep and brought back out on the third day. A miracle you’d need real faith to believe..And Jesus Himself chose that story as the sign.

Because like everything in Scripture, I think there are layers. And some of them are only seen by those with ears to hear and eyes to see.
