Like the Book of Job, Ecclesiastes is for people seeking to understand God honestly and not just comfortably. Before I became a Christian I saw the world in large part with a glass half empty and early on, this book helped me wrestle with some hard questions in a way that surprised me.

It is traditionally attributed to Solomon, who is probably my favorite writer in the Bible. His writings are full of ancient wisdom in its purest form, and Ecclesiastes especially reads as a letter written from a wise man who has experienced life fully.

I also always had a feeling Solomon wrote more than what was included in the canon, which is what first made me interested in the apocryphal texts. If you love the wisdom books, I strongly recommend Wisdom of Solomon and Testament of Solomon, as ancient texts connected to Solomon, wisdom, spirits, judgment, and the unseen world.

Ecclesiastes is not about hopelessness. It is honest and genuine with the reader. And I think that is why it still feels so strangely current and also tragically comforting. ❤️
