This is the first post in a new series I’m calling “Symbolic Signatures,” explaining symbols that recur in the Bible and what their significance is.

What’s in a name? Naming is an act of authority. They are not used merely as descriptions or sentiments, but instead represent spiritual and divine authority.

The common reading is that God changes people’s names to give them a better meaning. That is true as far as it goes.. but it stops short of the sharper pattern. In Genesis 2, God brings the animals to Adam and authorizes him to name them. Before naming says something about identity, it says something about the one permitted to assign it.

The more I studied, the harder the structure became to dismiss. God Himself renames only three people in the Old Testament: Abram, Sarai, and Jacob. Abram and Sarai disappear from the text after receiving their new names. Jacob does not. Even God later says, “Jacob, Jacob.” Some names replace. Some accumulate. Scripture carefully preserves the distinction.

Then the empires make the argument unavoidable. Pharaoh renames Joseph. Pharaoh Neco renames Eliakim. Nebuchadnezzar renames Mattaniah and Daniel’s four friends. The decisive evidence is Jehoiakim and Zedekiah. Both new names still honor Israel’s God, yet both were imposed by foreign rulers making vassals of the men. The content was never the point. The authority to assign it was.

Scripture can also record a claimed name without accepting it. The book remains Daniel, not Belteshazzar. Naomi calls herself Mara, but the narrator returns to Naomi two verses later. And Saul did not become Paul at conversion. Acts says he “was also called Paul.” Nearly every treatment of biblical name changes repeats that mistake.

Finally, the thread lands on Jesus..the Bible’s mightiest name with the highest authority. Yehoshua becomes Yeshua, rendered for us as Jesus. Joshua led the people into the land. Jesus leads them in for good. His name is not merely attached to His mission.. it states it. And even He did not name Himself. God gave Him the name above every name.
