TOUGH QUESTION | What is "Sin"?

For 28 years, I believed I was a good person.. and for 28 years, that belief was a one-way ticket to Hell. If that sounds harsh, I agree. But feelings do not get a vote in what is true.

I mocked Christianity, and the entire concept of sin, without ever really knowing what either one meant. Every Christian I asked seemed to have a different definition, and most didn’t seem to take the question seriously themselves. I let their disagreement stand in for an answer, and decided the whole thing must be nonsense. Not because I studied sin and found the case lacking. Because I never studied it myself at all.

Here is what I was actually doing instead. I compared myself to people I had already decided were worse than me, called the result good.. and never once measured myself against the only standard that was ever going to matter. I never measured myself against God and His Word. I measured myself against society and other people.

That is pride. That is a lack of humility and self-awareness. That is rigging the only test of this life that actually matters.

This is the longest post I will likely ever put on this page, because it is the most important question to understand. Because you cannot understand the free gift of grace; you cannot understand forgiveness; you can not understand the nature of God and his mercy for us; and most importantly, you cannot understand what Jesus Christ did for you and I, up on that cross….. not until you understand what it means to sin in the first place.

So this is what this post seeks to answer.. Not what sin feels like. Not what I think sin should be. Not what it used to be called before someone renamed it for your comfort. What God said it is.. the truth.
