HOLIDAY | (2026) | Mother's Day
In honor of Mother's Day today, I wanted to study what the Bible actually says about motherhood..and in studying the Scriptures, I was led to further explore exactly what God meant when he said that the seed of the woman would ultimately crush the head of the serpent..and for a verse I thought I was familiar with, I realized I completely missed one important detail…
In Scripture, the covenant lineage (aka the line God's promise moves through), always traces through the male line. It is part of the reason God emphasizes these bloodlines throughout the Bible via the genealogy passages with the lists of names you could never sound out if you tried to.. The accounts of bloodlines given via genealogies in the text is one of the most consistent patterns in the entire Bible.. except for once.
In the beginning, in Genesis 3:15, God promises that it will be through the seed of the woman, (not the seed of man), that the one who comes to crush evil (aka Jesus) will come through. And from that moment forward in Scripture, He never stops moving the redemptive story through a mother.
Eve brings life after the curse. Sarah conceives past biology and reason. Rachel's grief becomes the language Scripture uses centuries later to describe national suffering. Hannah surrenders the child she fought hardest to receive — and that child anoints David. Mary says yes as a teenager, knowing the cost.. and stands at the cross watching it happen exactly as she was warned it would.
These are not five separate stories — they are one thread woven delicately to ensure the fulfillment of the covenant line that leads to Jesus..regardless of what it would cost them. And each time that threat grows greater, God doesn't work around the mother — he works through them and they selflessly sacrifice whatever's necessary. Not one of them lived to see the full scope of what their sacrifice made possible. And ultimately, I think being a mother can probably be a thankless task that can only be explained by what is a mother's love.
Happy Mother's Day to every woman who carries the weight of being a mother on top of the everyday pressures of this life. Know that God sees your sacrifices every single day, even when no one else does 🤍
