My favorite part of studying the Bible is when its truth is revealed even in the subtle details. John 10 is more literal than people make it. Sheep actually recognize their shepherd’s voice, which means Jesus was not reaching for a soft illustration. He was pointing to something observable in real life.

God’s fingerprint is evident in all of creation, and Scripture repeatedly uses creation itself to teach us how His kingdom works.

Sheep do not follow every voice in the field because it sounds loud, close, familiar, or convincing. They follow one voice because they know who it belongs to. The more you read Scripture, the more familiar His voice becomes.

“His sheep follow him because they know his voice.” John 10:4
