PROPHETIC PROFILE | The Olive Tree
Do you know why Romans 11 makes replacement theology (the idea that God was finished with Israel as a nation and the Church took her place) so hard to defend?
Paul does not describe Israel as a dead tree God ripped out of the ground and replaced with the Church. He describes Gentile believers as wild branches grafted into a root that was already there. The Church did not become the root. The Church was added by grace. And Paul immediately warns the grafted-in branches not to boast over the natural branches. Israel’s hardening is real, but Paul says it is “in part” and “until,” which means it is not final and not total. I’m not saying anyone gets saved apart from Jesus Christ. I’m saying Romans 11 makes it very hard to argue God erased Israel when Paul says His gifts and calling are irrevocable. The warning is not just for Israel. It is also for the Church.
