Isaiah is one of those books that makes it increasingly difficult to treat the Old and New Testaments as two disconnected stories, especially to the careful reader..it has earned a few nicknames, such as “The Fifth Gospel,” and “the mini Bible” (down to its breakdown of 66 chapters, mirroring the Bibles 66 books) and for good reason..

The book begins with a holy God confronting rebellion. Isaiah sees the throne and is immediately undone. Judah keeps looking to kings, alliances, power, and political security for what only God can provide. Nations rise and nations fall. Human beings keep building refuges for themselves..and the Living God keeps exposing every one of them.

And yet through all of that judgment is a promise that refuses to disappear.

A virgin will conceive. A child from David’s line will be called Mighty God. A Branch will rise from Jesse. A cornerstone will be laid in Zion. A Servant will bring light to the nations. And then Isaiah 53 gives us an innocent Servant rejected by men, pierced for transgressions, bearing the sins of others, dying, being buried..and somehow seeing life beyond His offering.

Isaiah 53 is an entire case study in its own right for how brilliant and intentional God’s Word is..but I think the greater point is what the chapter is actually saying. The Servant is not God overlooking His holiness. He is the answer His holiness demands. God does not preserve His promises by pretending sin is less serious than it is, and He does not uphold His righteousness by abandoning the people He promised to redeem. Judgment is real. Mercy is real. And somehow, both meet in the Servant.

Isaiah begins with human failure and ends with new heavens and a new earth.

As someone who originally opened the Bible looking for where it broke down, books like Isaiah made that position increasingly impossible to maintain.

Once you see it, the book undeniably reads like one story unfolding across centuries..with the same problems, the same promises, and ultimately the same Person at the center of it. ✝️
