SCRIPTURE | 1 John 4:7-12 | (God Is Love)

The Apostle John tells us, “God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.” I share this verse because it reveals insights into the nature of God. To have faith in someone, you need to get to know them and know their character. The same goes for a relationship with God.

One of the most important shifts in my faith happened when I started to understand God’s true nature. He is not the wrathful and vengeful God many people assume from the Old Testament. Love comes from God because it belongs to His nature. Paul says in Romans 5:5 that God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit. That same love now flows out of us to others.

John gives us a test: If someone truly knows God, something of His nature should be visible in them. So don’t just ask whether you believe in God. Ask whether that belief is showing up through His work in you.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, but perfect love drives out all fear. When we enter into relationship with Him, His perfect love changes our hearts from the inside out. That heart change is what lets His love flow through us to others; exactly as John shows us in this passage.
